Do you ever feel "spent"?!

Wow! It's the beginning of a new week in the Franklin house and everything is in high gear. My husband is a Pastor, so typically the beginning of the week is our time to recover & catch up from a busy Sunday. This week is no different. My list for the week is probably much like yours, groceries, loads and loads of laundry, clean bathrooms, wash sheets, and clean small kids' rooms. Then I've got a few others that are "must do's" - write lesson for Sunday, I'm starting a new ladies Bible Study this week, check on the visitors that came on Sunday - oh my! And of course handle all of this with 2 children under the age of 6! It's enough to make my head spin! All of these are wonderful things (well, except for the cleaning of the bathrooms - I'm actually quite scared of what I will find in my son's bathroom!) and I want to do them for my family. However, often times these are the very things that make me feel... spent and exhausted.
Recently I read about another woman who felt very spent in many areas of her life and yet was given an amazing word of promise and hope. A word that you and I can lean & rely on as well.
1 Kings 17:14
For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, "the jar of flour shall not be spent,
and the jug of oil shall not be empty,
until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth."
This is what the prophet, Elijah, says to the widow who was about to make a last meal for she & her son, for they were very poor. I'm sure this woman felt like she was at the end of her rope. Imagine the kind of day she was having! And yet, Elisha told her that the very things that sustain her (flour and oil) would not be spent or become empty!
I too want the things that sustain me, my relationship with God, the love of my husband, the admiration of my children, finances, housing to never run empty or be totally spent. For I know that if these are in full supply, then I will not be totally spent as well! With these in full supply, I can keep going no matter what my outer circumstances may look like, no matter how full my "To Do List" gets.
I also love the hope that Elijah gives at the end of this verse, "until the day that the Lord sends rain upon the earth." Rain does indeed come for the children of Israel after a very long drought and rain will come for us too!
What kind of rain are you waiting on? Finances? Good health? Job opportunities? Hang on! For they do come!
Thank you Lord for the hope that the rain will come and for the promise that the very things that sustain us will not be spent! Amen.

Penny, i find that i am spent and understand what you have wrote as if you were in my head. i too want to feel the way you do when it comes to my family and living. i think i let the "spent" moments get to me and i have to remember that God will always do for me what he feels fit and i should have no worries about the things in my life. God has proven to me time and time again he will not let me go with out,so i just have to keep in trust with him my everything. thank you for this post it was a welcomed reminder!

I'm 2 days back after 2 weeks vacation and I'm right there with you. Spent and empty. Not a good place for a banker. I do know it was worth the break especially the week I spent with the Fab-4 (grand-kids that is). If you know the Fab-4, AARP is not too far in your horizon. Anyway, we all end up empty and spent that is why we need a Savior. That's also why as soon as I close out here I am going to the well. Then all will be well, well!! Join me at John 4 and you'll find one spent sister. Good work gals..Keep it going.
