Double Fudge Chocolate

Recently I was asked to lead a time of devotion for a group of teenage girls. They were from Chicago, visiting our church in New Orleans, conducting our VBS and doing some Katrina relief work. Their Youth Pastor planned a night in the French Quarter and then afterwards a time of devotion for the kids. My husband was assigned the guys and I had the wonderful pleasure of leading those very impressionable young ladies!
So after a wonderful time of coffee and beignets I lead them over to the steps of the Mississippi. It was a beautiful night! The following is what I shared with them - as you read this I hope you gain a new outlook at what grace might be like (in regular everyday life terms)!
I TOTALLY love chocolate! I love how it tastes, I love how it melts in my mouth, I love it melted, frozen, warm, cold - just about anything about chocolate - I love it! Every time my husband & I go to a restaurant and it comes time for desert, I tell myself, "I'm going to try something new!" And then I cave and go for the chocolate. And shouldn't chocolate in of itself be good enough? Sure. But why do I love Double Fudge chocolate even more? I could eat double fudge chocolate cake with chocolate ice cream on the side - and as my Dad used to say, "and eat it all with a chocolate spoon!"
Now that you've got this image of this heavenly bliss in your head and perhaps on your taste buds, I want to share a verse with you. I think I have found the spiritual equivalent to double fudge chocolate in scripture (minus the calories of course)!

John 1:16 (ESV)
And from His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.
As soon as I read this, I thought about double fudge chocolate! Stay with me - I'll show you want I mean. What exactly is grace? The Greek word for grace is charis, meaning unmerited favor. Grace is something Christ has given us that we certainly do not deserve! How wonderful is grace - all by itself - grace! I am so glad that He shows me grace every single day, for I'm afraid I need it from the time my eyes pop open to the time I pull the covers back over my very tired body!!
So if grace is already SUPER WONDERFUL - what in the world is grace upon grace? And why would we need it?
At this point in my devotional with the teenagers a young lady answered this question beautifully! She said, "that the first grace was what Christ did for us on the cross so many years ago and the second grace is what He shows us in our every day life!"
I love this! I can already enjoy amazing things from the grace He shows me - the grace He allows me to experience. But then, if that wasn't good already - I get to experience grace upon grace, much like a double fudge chocolate desert!
Today, enjoy your desert! And by all means - share it with those around you! Grab another spoon and invite others to share in this wonderful experience of grace upon grace!
I love you all dearly!

That was so good! I so appreciate your analogy. Double chocolate grace is perfection.
Thanks for that!
Great post! Pass me the fork as I want to experience... :D
First... gotta go by the bakery and pick up some chocolate napoleans for tonight after reading that! Second, lest you think mommy's ministry is lost on the kids, I walked into the worship center the other day to see JP (our son) at the microphone singing, guess what... wait for it... that's right, "grace upon grace!" He had already turned it into a song! Great job, Pen!
I love your word picture, Penny. Thank you so much for another great post. :)
THis is beautiful! I love teenage girls and new orleans and chocolate and grace and this post!! =)
WOW...I will always remember this story when ever I pick up a piece of chocolate. I will then be reminded to share this wonderful analogy.
Hugs,
Regi

Ha! That's a great analogy. I'll have to keep that one in mind and tell my Bible study ladies. I'm here from NFF. I hope you are having a great day!
