The beauty of Fridge Letters

This morning with coffee in hand, I opened my One Year Bible.  I breathed in deeply and just sat still for a moment before reading.  I shared with the Lord some of the things that were on my heart.

Some were requests, some were admittedly "whys" (I just can't seem to rid myself of those!), and some were praises and thanks.  I asked the Lord to give me a special word.  It didn't have to be an answer for all that I had just laid before Him, but just His still small voice that speaks volumes to my soul!

I read the Old Testament portion.  Right now we're in Daniel and I just LOVE his story.  Then I read the New Testament portion and God started speaking wisdom over a specific question I had just asked Him.  I stopped and wrote in my journal.  Then, I found a real treasure....  I read the passage from Psalms.  Currently in the One Year Bible we are in Psalms 119.  In fact, I've written a couple of blog posts from this chapter in the recent weeks.

The phrase "Are you reading my mail" went without saying!  It was as if I had written the Psalm myself!

I looked away from my Bible for just a moment - just to breathe in the Lord's words.  As I was looking up - I noticed our refrigerator.  Now... before you check out on me thinking I'm chasing a rabbit - stay with me!

Our fridge looks something like this...

It's filled with Leap Frog letters along with many other who-knows-where-they-came-from letters.  Often times I'll come into the kitchen to find all the letters organized by color.  Other times, I'll find them in their respective A-B-C order.  Then sometimes the kids make really neat designs with the them.  One time JP was very protective over his cross.  He put the letters in 2 lines forming a cross and shared with anyone who tried to mess with them that it was "the cross Jesus died on!"

As I looked at those letters on the fridge - I remembered the structure of Psalm 119.

I'm sure you all know this... but just in case you didn't....

Psalm 119 is an acrostic.  This chapter is organized into 8 verse segments where the first word of each verse starts with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet.

For example, the first letter in the Hebrew alphabet is aleph and the first word in verses 1-8 starts with aleph.  The next 8 verses all start with beth.

There are 22 letters in the Hebrew alphabet; which gives us 176 verses – the longest chapter in the whole Bible!

Often times when acrostics were used in scripture it was to aid in memorization.  I’m not too sure I could ever memorize all of Psalm 119!  However, there is something else I see in using an alphabetic acrostic in this manner.  Well, I actually see two things… One is completeness and the other is beauty.

Psalm 119, each segment, is about true devotion to the Law of the Lord – God’s Word.  Imagine, writing your own acrostic using our English alphabet and writing only one sentence about God’s Word.  The psalmist has written 8 verses per letter – all about obeying, treasuring, following, delighting in His Law.

And it’s beautifully written.

For some reason, looking at the letters on my fridge reminded me of the complete beauty of God’s Word.

Today’s Hebrew Letter segment was Qoph

Here were my favorite two verses from today’s reading:

Psalm 119:147-148 (ESV)
I rise before dawn and cry for help, I hope in Your words.
My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on Your promise.

I pray you too will find His Word complete and beautiful!

Do you have a favorite verse from Psalm 119?

If not, go read it...
you just might find a fridge-worthy treasure!

I would love to get to know you better! You can find me almost every day sharing what God is teaching me personally over at my blog, Living Above Ministries. I also am totally addicted to Facebook & Twitter! So grab a cup of coffee and let's chat!!

One of my favorites is Psalm 119:105 Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

ohhhh!!! That's one of my favs too! My pastor/hubby preaches it often! He says that God's Word is a lamp to our feet not always a Q-Beam to our highway! LOL! Sometimes God only shows us the very next step - not miles down the road.

What a beautiful post! I was just reading about how Psalm 119 is an acrostic a week or so ago. I read through it along with Spurgeon's notes on it...wow!! So beautiful.

I LOVE Spurgeon!! He's one of my favs!! Now you've inspired me to go look up what he has to say about Psalm 119!

That's why I love this community! Encouraging one another to learn and grow in the Lord!
