The Fall

A couple days ago one of the Littles fell off her scooter. I witnessed the fall and held my breath for the first few seconds until I could see the whites of her eyes that told me this was bigger than a normal spill off the scooter.
My nine-year old is fine. She’s banged up with icky abrasions from head to toe, but nothing a day home with Mom and some TLC couldn’t cure. Only my ailing Little didn’t see it that way at all. To her, falling off her scooter was definitely a ‘worst case scenario.’
Perfectly content to bemoan the ‘horrible cuts’ and ‘humongous scrapes’ I could see we were headed on a one-way, non-stop flight to a pity party. After a day of convalescing and putting my best Florence Nightingale foot forward, it was time for a little tough love.
And that’s when we started talking about the blessings rather than dwelling on the burdens. My savvy Little was quick to point out that her pain did not feel like blessing. Perhaps not, but there was still plenty of gratitude to name.
For example, we talked about how grateful we were for the time alone together. With three siblings, my four Littles appreciate one-on-one time with their mama. And we had a day full of conversations, reading, and snuggling (even if it occurred between hydrogen peroxide and triple antibiotic treatments).
Mia, my mother, came over for a treasured dose of TLC and the three of us piled up on my bed and enjoyed conversations that never would have occurred with out The Fall.
We discovered a new (to us!) book series called The Sisters in Time. We dove head first into Anna’s Fight for Hope and are totally engrossed in the Depression era story of twelve-year-old Anna Harrington and the lessons of faith and friendship she is learning.
Our daughter’s sweet third grade teacher stopped by on her way home to check on her student-turned-patient and she ended up staying for dinner.
After counting her blessings, my Little understands that the bruises, scrapes, and pain are still there. But, her fall was definitely not a ‘worst case scenario.’
We all fall. Sometimes we rebound quickly from minor setbacks. Sometimes we fall so hard that physical and spiritual healing is slow to come.
I counted another blessing as I looked ahead in our daily devotional this week. Tomorrow’s devotional in Jesus Calling for Kids is titled “I Will Catch You”. If you use this devotional heads up! This is a *spoiler alert*.
Using Romans 8:39 as the scripture reference the devotional encourages us to depend only on God not our friends, our circumstances, or ourselves.
“Don’t be afraid of falling; I am your safety net.
I will catch you – I promise!”
Jesus Calling for Kids, January 21, pg. 22
As I read the devotional to my bruised Little about trusting God, who will catch her when she falls, I saw an understanding dance across her face. My prayer is that when she and her siblings fall, no matter what the circumstances, they will know and trust that the One who loves them most will catch them.
Love,
