Moms Like Me
I'm excited to introduce you to Megan O'Bryant. She is a beautiful mom to Rhys (31/2 years old) and Molli (16 months). She and her husband Titus are great friends of mine. They have been living in Texas for the last few years while Titus completes his seminary degree. I know you will learn a lot from Megan's interview!
*What are your favorite activities with your children?
Reading, singing/dancing, watching the imaginative play that they come up with on their own.
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Reading - when I have time for it. Honestly, I don't have time (or energy) for anything else!
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Feeling those little arms wrapped around my neck, a kiss on my cheek, and that little unmistakable child voice saying, "I love you". Watching them become "little people" with personalities, thoughts and reactions.
I love to watch them discover the world. At Molli's age, especially, every day is a new adventure to be faced with such excitement. The smallest things are found to be absolutely amazing!
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
Remaining patient and being consistent, and accepting the lack of "me time" that comes with mommyhood. I mean, really can I PLEASE go to the bathroom by myself this time?
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Enjoy every moment - even those seemingly endless night feedings because it actually passes so quickly. It seems like yesterday that Rhys was born, and now he can carry on a conversation with complete paragraphs. They are only those itty bitty babies for a short period of time. Love 'em and hold 'em!
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
As I go through my day, I find myself talking to God and asking for help and wisdom to care for these children that He has given to me.
I don't know about you, but Megan really encouraged me to cherish this sweet time with my little guy! It will pass SO quickly! Thanks so much, Megan for your challenging words!

I'm so excited to introduce you to this week's mom, Melissa Hindal. She was actually one of my roommates in college! We have lots of fun memories together! She now lives in Franklin, Nebraska and is mommy to three beautiful girls!
*What are your favorite activities with your children?
Listening to them sing songs from church and off of worship CD's, playing at the pool, cuddling up to watch a movie or take a nap, and doing our catechism questions together.
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Scrapbooking, gardening, and cooking
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Seeing my children grow in love and knowledge of God and His word.
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
Dealing with the outside influences of the world....even in the little things it seems.
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
The Lord is my strength. He knows the kind of day you have, and loves your children even more that you do if you can imagine that! They are in no safer hands than His!
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
I always do my devotions when the girls are asleep so it is quiet, but I find that I talk to God throughout the whole day, when I need strength or when He lays someone on my heart to pray for. I was just reading a blog post about God as our refuge and that is definitely the best way to describe it! He is always secure and always there to protect!
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I was saved when I was a little girl, but over the past five years God has become SO real to me....that Friend that sticks closer than a brother. His presence is all around me. I am never alone and when I put my trust in Him, and hand it ALL over, my family and I are blessed so much more that I could have ever done by myself!!
Thanks so much, Melissa! It is so great to see the Lord's working in you and your family! He never leaves us or forsakes us! Such a simple, yet important reminder!!

Deanna Willems is a sweet mom to four children - 5, 4, almost 3, and 6 months. She and her family live in New Hampshire, and besides mothering she also helps her husband with his church ministry.

*What are your favorite activities with your children?
I love to read with them, take them to the park, and do crafts with them
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Hobbies?? What are hobbies?? Actually, I like to scrapbook and blog. My husband says my family is my hobby - I have a big family and many of them are unsaved, so I like to be involved with their lives as much as I can!
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
The most rewarding aspect of mothering is seeing the fruit of your labor - whether it's seeing one of my kids overcome a bad habit or learn a new skill. Also love hugs and kisses!! :)
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
I think the most challenging aspect right now is bed time! Getting four children to bed in an orderly manner has proven to be quite complicated! On a more serious note, I would say training my children to know and love God, and being an example to them. I fail at that every day, and yet it is the most important task I have!
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Love intentionally (check out my blog, Loving Intentionally) Loving our children doesn't always come naturally and we must learn to love them the way God loves us. Read Grace Based Parenting by Dr. Tim Kimmel - this has given me a fresh look at parenting, encouragement, and hope.
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
It's hard, but I try to get in some Bible reading at least four times a week, and I do a small group Bible study. I need to dedicate more time to prayer.
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I am so thankful that the Lord has blessed me with four amazing children. He continues to draw me closer to Him. I seek to be the mom He has called me to be!
Thank you SO much Deana. Make sure to visit her blog, to get to know her better!! I'm sure she'd love to hear from you!!

Kimberly Cassidy mom to four boys ages: 7, 5, 4, and 2. She and her family currently live in Granite Falls, NC. She has some great insights to share with us this week!!

*What are your favorite activities with your children?
Walking with them and talking about the beauty of God's creation. Taking them to parks and looking for new trails to blaze! Taking them on their own personal Mommy and Me time. Playing games (Uno attack is fun and so many others!) Anything that brings a smile to their face!
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Shopping, exercising, organizing, and cleaning (sick, I know, but I love it!) Reading, Movie connoisseur.....
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
It is an awesome privilege to raise our four boys to be servants for God! It is pure joy that they bring to my heart when I see their smiles and laughter. Watching them grow and learn is so exciting, and to know that I get to be a part of that is a blessing!
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
Being consistent!! Staying on a schedule, making sure each one feels loved and taken care of (including my husband). Also, making time to take care of myself. I think it is so hard at times to fulfill all of the roles that a mother has, but "I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4:13
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Make sure that you know Jesus Christ as your Savior and Heavenly Father. Without Him you cannot possible be the best mom you can be. We will never be perfect until we get to Heaven, but to truly love your children as they ought to be loved, you need to have Christ's love in you. Do the best you can, but leave the rest to God. He truly is in control! Keep your eyes on your Creator. Do not compare to others - God says it is foolishness to compare to others. You will have peace in your heart if you choose to please God and not man (even friends, family...)
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
By reading His Word daily. I try to do it first thing in the morning, but find myself just reading through the day as I can. Also keeping in close communication with Him through prayer. He wants us to talk to Him and He wants us to ask Him for things is we will just take the time. I find that the more I am in His Word and in prayer, the more I know who He truly is and the more I reflect His Spirit towards my family and others.
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
Regardless of our past mistakes and failures, our prayer and desire for our family is that our children will grow up to love the Lord with all of their heart, and walk in His ways and share the Gospel of the free gift of salvation with all. Our prayer is that our family would magnify and glorify God and that takes us yielding to the Holy Spirit each day. No we do not do it everyday. We are only sinners saved by God's grace through faith!!
Thank you SO much, Kimberly for your thoughts! We could truly sense your love of mothering, but also your dependence upon the Lord for strength for that job!

Meet Linda Patterson. She and her husband live in Wellsboro, PA. She is a mom to three grown and married children, two of which have children of their own. She is a recently retired nurse, who is always ready to give some medical advice or a sweet word of encouragement. I know you will enjoy this interview!

*What were your favorite activities with your children?
We loved to travel with the kids, camping, playing games, reading to them
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Physical activity and reading
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Watching my children become adults who love and serve the Lord, and seeing them raise their children with Godly wisdom and principles.
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
Confidence in feeling like we did the right thing with specific disciplines.
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Seeking God's guidance everyday and loving your children....remember that they ARE children, and will not be perfect. They won't even remember what you told them yesterday!
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
You have to focus on setting that time apart and making a habit even if you miss a day. Don't beat yourself up for missing it, just get back to it!
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
Now that I'm a grandmother, it is easy to look at all the things that I wish I had done. So, I am thankful that God allowed my children to turn out well in spite of my shortcomings. God has also given me that opportunity to be a part of my grandchildren's lives and help them to learn about God.
Thanks so much, Linda. I love what you mentioned about remembering that our children are...CHILDREN! Such a simple yet important reminder!
Check back in 2 weeks to meet another wonderful mom!!

This week's mom is originally from Campbell, NY, although she now ministers with her pastor husband in Middlebury Center, PA. Babette has three children, one boy (age 13) and two girls (ages 10 and 6). She is a joy to be around and I know you will glean much from her interview!!

*What are your favorite activities with your children?
We love reading together (because it involves snuggling), singing, telling jokes, playing on the Wii, and we're just starting to get into family bike riding now that our youngest is getting more confident.
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Singing, reading, writing songs, some crafts, but not devoted to any one type
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Hearing encouragement come from my children (without prompting them first), and seeing their awareness of the power of prayer grow.
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
Wanting them to be encouragers (without prompting them) and watching them struggle to grow into their personalities. It's really hard not to put my expectations or dreams on their plate.
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Pray!! Be willing to ask for help - and to give it, no matter what state your house or their house is in. Seek your husband as a full partner, and pray for that end if he is not currently receptive.
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
I actually subscribe to some online devotionals that just come to my inbox, and then when I am devouring my forwards and chuckles from friends, I am reminded that God wants time with me too. Don't be discouraged if you can't fit in the same amount of study at the same time every day (although it is easier to make good habits that way), just carve out some time - intentionally.
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I was very much the 'career woman' mommy before I moved here 10 years ago. And I NEVER thought I would become the woman who accepts other people's kids at a moments notice to stay or hang out at my house - especially (gulp) toddlers! Even while laughing at myself on the inside ("haha - you're doing WHAT?!?! WOULD THE REAL Babette please stand up?!"), I have grown to enjoy the nurturing that can happen and the encouragement I have been able to be to other women. Oh, and about that. Be intentional about befriending other women - it is SUPER worth the effort!! :)
Wow, Babette!! Thanks so much for those words of wisdom and for sharing your heart with us! Teaching your children to encourage is such a special thing, and I'm sure you were a HUGE encouragement to our readers today!!

This is another special interview for me!! Our mom for this week is Lori Pereira who just happens to be my sister-in-law (our husbands are brothers!). She currently lives in beautiful Naples, FL, and stays very busy as a pastor's wife, mom to Lily (6) and Lucas (3), and as a Sales Director for Mary Kay Cosmetics.

Tickle time, date night (aka pizza picnic on the living room floor and a movie), and Bible stories before bed
*What are your personal hobbies?
Working my business - sounds crazy, but that's what I have time for right now, and it's leading me to hobbies I would love to have - traveling!!
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Seeing my kids LOVE going to church and listening to Lily trust Christ as her Savior. Also, listening to both kids pray that God would help them make "right" choices tomorrow!
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
Time management, not sweating the small stuff, being consistent in discipline
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Dishes will always be there - your kids will never be this age again.
Do things that truly make you happy so that you have an outlet for you as "YOU" not just you as "mom".
You are not the end all for your child - allow kids to experience things that they will thrive in that you are not right there beside them - they need it AND you need it.
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
It's a morning thing for me, and I had to come to the understanding that my time with God comes in all different ways - singing, reading Scripture, devotional books/studies, prayer, and they don't have to be done at one time - my time with God should be ALL day - remember it's a relationship not a 1 hour session.
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE investing in other women - and what I went to school for is not what I'm doing now, so let God use all your skills in any kind of way He deems best!
What great thoughts, Lori!! Thank you so much! Take a couple minutes to check out Lori's website, here. She has some great things (especially for your summer skin!).

By attending church, and a young mother's Sunday School, also through personal devotions, and devotions with my kids, MOPS.
*Is there anything else that you would like to share?

Thanks so much, Sarah!! Those are very wise words...."Don't be afraid to ask for help!" I think as moms we feel the need to be "super-mom"! However, there are times that we simply need help, and others can receive a blessing from being that help!
Do you ever struggle with asking for help??

*What are your favorite activities with your children?

Reading, cooking, watching sports, some craftiness here and there. I love to play tennis as well, but it hasn't happened as much since the kids came around!
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
The hugs, kisses, "I love you's, " and conversations about God - all are AMAZING!
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
I have a hard time being consistent with discipline day in and day out - it is TIRING!
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Pray a lot. And be THERE with and for your kiddos!
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
Just started trying to get up at 5:30 AM in the last month - it is the only way I get daily time with Him. I also pray in the shower every day!
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I was an elementary music teacher
Thank you SO much, Erin! I know many of us "young moms" can identify with the newness of the job we've been given! I know I pray in the shower every day, too. It's so vital to find ways of building our relationship with the Lord in ways the work for us!!

I'm so excited for you to get to know our mom for this week. Her name is Anne Browder, and is a mom to three grown children: Melodee, Todd, and Guy. All three of them are married. Melodee/Mac have three grown children, and are the parents to three of Anne's five great-grandchildren. Todd is divorced and active in the life of his daughter. Guy has one daughter as well. Todd and Guy live close to Anne and her husband, Glenn, while Melodee lives in the D.C.
area.
She and her husband served as missionaries in Bolivia, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, and were greatly used of the Lord in those ministries. They now live in Petersburg, VA. I know you will glean some valuable insights from her!

*What personal hobbies/activities do you enjoy?
Until my eye sight worsened, I enjoyed cross-stitch....and I really miss the activity. Now I enjoy reading (small time periods often) and enjoy Christian historical fiction....also good music is a joy to me.
*How did you find time to balance your busy lifewith a personal time with the Lord?
I have found that getting an early start by having my devotions with the Lord is the greatest help to me. On those days when it doesn't work out, I do feel the difference. Good Christian music during the day is also of great strength to me. Just seeing how the Lord leads in our lives through meetings strengthens me also....and the fellowship and correspondence with dear friends is valuable also. It try to read Christian growth books continually also.
*How did your life in a foreign country impact your children?
I feel that the ministries we were in were of great value to our children. All three of them were with us during our terms of service in Bolivia...but not with us in the later ministries in Mexico and Puerto Rico. Exposure to the Bolivian culture was good for them, and we do not feel that they suffered from being out of the U.S. Even while on deputation they were active and enjoyed many sites they would not have seen otherwise as we traveled.
We often combined services/sight-seeing which broadened their experiences. Of course, they have forgotten some of these, but enough are remembered so that often when we are together now we talk of these times. They were definitely an asset to us.
When in the U.S. they attended our church's Christian school, but were home-schooled while in Bolivia...along with other missionary children...we all shared the teaching load!
Thanks so much, Anne!! Raising children on the mission field couldn't have been easy, but it's so neat to see how God used it to shape and mold your children into who they are today!

Londa Montgomery is a sweet friend of mine and I was so excited to interview her for this week's Moms Like Me post! She used to be my neighbor in Florida when I was in junior high and high school. She now lives in Fort Collins, Colorado, and is the mom to three wonderful boys, ages 15 (almost), 13, and 10, and one beautiful daughter age 7.

*What are your favorite activities with your children?
Reading (although only Adriana really wants to be read to now!) also going to the park and picnics at the river
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Writing (wrote a novel last year just for fun, piano, reading, decorating, shopping with friends/mom/sisters, antiquing/flea markets. I love a good bargain!
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Just the fellowship with kids, what they teach me every day, and watching them grow and mature.
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
Remembering that the fruit of labors sometimes is late, but it will come eventually. Juggling work and kids' routines is another challenge. Realizing it might not all get done and being okay with that!
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Focus more on the spirit of your home more than the "workings" of it. In other words, not being constantly stressed about what needs doing, but learning how to get the children involved in daily procedures, so that they remember that mom was pleasant, fun, and always there for them. Don't be ruled by the circumstances of the day....stay constant in the Lord, and He will allow you to create a stable environment for your family.
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
I get up at 5:15 so that I can have a good 45 minutes alone in the morning before my kids have to get up. I've learned that if I don't crave out that time for myself, it won't happen!
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
Just that I love being a mom, and fell truly blessed to have a loving husband who has shared this journey!
Londa has been such a blessing in my life, and I hope this was an encouragement to you! I sure am enjoying all the wisdom that our moms have shared so far!! Don't forget to stop by next week to meet another mom who may have some things in common with YOU!!

*What are your favorite activities with your children?
Road trips and field trips....we like to GO!!
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
Talking, blogging, and thrifting
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Watching my children develop a close relationship with God and each other
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
LAUNDRY!! and disciplining/training a strong-willed child
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Give yourself grace...instead of trying to BE the perfect mother, introduce your children to the Perfect Father!
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
I pray for wisdom often, pray "breathe prayers" many times during the day, try to listen to God's voice and obey His leading (though I don't always), and I read some amount of scripture daily (but not in a designated quiet time). I used to be much more scheduled and disciplined in this area.....before a husband and children!
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I can feel a stirring deep within to "drop it all" and GO in the name of the Lord (find more here)....My husband and I are praying for God's guidance and direction.
Thank you so much, Michelle!! I really appreciated your advice to "introduce our children to the perfect Father". What a thought provoking statement!!

While we may not be able to sit down at Starbucks with this week's mother, I think we can all learn some amazing things from her!
Hannah was married to a man named Elkanah, who had another wife named Peninnah. Talk about a complicated marriage! The other challenging aspect of her life was her barrenness. During the Bible times, this was considered a sign of reproach in a woman's life. Volumes have been written about Hannah's faith and prayers, but I want to focus on two main lessons that I think ALL women can glean from this amazing mother!
1. Hannah had a NEED.
At the beginning of her story in 1 Samuel we see that her heart was broken over the fact that she couldn't bear any children for her husband. She was mocked by Peninnah, and was probably scorned in her community.
We all have needs and desires as well. I won't pretend to know the pain in your life, but I do know that you have had the exact same feelings as Hannah. We have all felt hopeless and alone. We have all had desires that never seem to come to pass!
2. Hannah found the ANSWER.
We read later in the chapter that Hannah accompanied her husband to Shiloh to worship. She sought an isolated place in order to speak to the One who could do something about her problem. She poured out her heart to the Almighty God who created her, and who knew the deepest desires of her heart!
We have the answer too! How many times do we first talk to our best friend, husband, or family member about our hurts, needs, and desires before we even think of approaching the One who can actually do something about it? He is waiting for us to pour out our heart to Him. He wants to heal and provide in amazing ways!
These are very simple principles that are extremely difficult to live out on a daily basis! If we do choose to hand over our struggles to the Lord, He is ready and waiting to work in and through us!
*Note: Don't forget to praise the Lord for His working in your life. Hannah spoke thankfulness and praise to Him after he provided the son she had been longing for:
Then Hannah prayed and said:
"My heart rejoices in the LORD;
in the LORD my horn is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
for I delight in your deliverance......
Take some time to read the rest of her prayer and get to know Hannah a little better this weekend by reading 1 Samuel 1 and 2.......

Moms Like Me

I am so excited to introduce another amazing woman for our Moms Like Me interview this week. Her name is Chele Chesnut, mother to three boys ages 14, 12, and 4, and one seven year old girl. Her hometown is York, Pennsylvania, but she now currently lives at the beach in North Carolina.

* What are your favorite activities with your children?
I always enjoyed blowing bubbles with the young ones. So much giggling! :) Coloring with them. And for the older ones, mainly watching them play sports and being involved in our church. However, we like to play cards and games too!
*What are YOUR personal hobbies?
To be honest, I really don't have any kind of crafty hobbies. They can change from season to season! I'm actually dwelling in that very thing as we speak, I don't have an answer at the moment.
*What have you found to be the most rewarding aspect of mothering?
Watching my children respect and love others. When I get compliments about how well behaved and polite they are. I know I've done the best job I can! Not just those things but when I see their faith in action. I know Jesus is so proud of us all! :)
*What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of mothering?
The what's and what not's I should allow my teens to do. That has definitely been a struggle. You don't want to keep them in a bubble, they'll never learn life lessons. However, you also don't want to let them do things that may hurt them or others. It's such a fine line.
*What advice would you like to share with other moms?
Advice.... hmmm. Not sure I am qualified for that. All I can say, is pray for them always. Keep them in church activities and let them learn from your actions. So watch what you do, they are watching if you think they are or not! Be a Proverbs 31 Woman (mother and wife!)
*How do you find time to cultivate your own personal relationship with the Lord?
I call them conversations with God. You know, it's hard to find time to do this but after a recent bible study I've learned that I can be talking with him while I'm doing dishes or while I'm cleaning bathrooms. Anytime! So I make the most of it that way. I tried doing devotions every night and every morning. It's hard to fit them in with life. At least at our home! So instead of fretting over it, I do it all day long!
*Is there anything else about yourself that you would like to share?
I think all Mom's do things differently. I've found some work for me and some don't. I used to get really worked up when something doesn't work right or the way it did for another Mom. However, that has changed cause guess what I realized? God only gives us what we can handle, he's there 24/7 to help us. Just keep that in mind with all issues in life! He shows us the way if we can just be still and listen. Psalms 25:4-5.
I am so thankful to Chele for sharing with us this week! If you would like to get to know her a little more, make sure to check out her personal blog, The Bona Fide Life, as well as the encouraging website she founded, Gather Inspirit.
Don't miss Moms Like Me next week as we meet a mother with characteristics we can all admire!
